"Seven Keys To Baldpate" est une pièce de Gerge M. Cohan basée sur le roman de Earl Derr Biggers. Cohan a écrit la pièce en exactement dix jours. L'une des pièces les plus novatrices de Cohan. Cela déconcerta certains publics et certains critiques, mais devint un succès surprise.
Le romancier Billy Magee parie avec un ami fortuné qu’il peut écrire une histoire de 10 000 mots en moins de 24 heures. Il se retire dans une station de montagne estivale appelée Baldpate Inn, en plein hiver, et s’enferme, croyant avoir la seule clé. Cependant, il est visité pendant la nuit par une succession rapide d'autres personnes: un politicien corrompu, un policier tordu, un ermite, une journaliste feinteuse, une bande de criminels, etc., dont aucun n'a peine à entrer dans l'auberge éloignée - il semble y avoir sept clés pour Baldpate.
Magee n'effectue aucun travail, mais se laisse entraîner dans les liens hidés des autres visiteurs. Il observe avec dérision que tous ces incidents et personnages compliqués sont ceux qu'il a écrits encore et encore. Juste avant minuit, il découvre que tout le monde est un acteur engagé pour commettre un canular, orchestré par un ami de Magee pour l'empêcher de terminer son récit.
Dans l'épilogue, l'auberge est vide et une machine à écrire tremble à l'étage: Magee a terminé son récit avant minuit et a gagné le pari. Il révèle que rien ne s'était passé pendant les 24 heures; tout le mélodrame précédent, y compris les acteurs et le canular, constitue l'histoire.
Based on the novel by Earl Derr Biggers, (who later went on to write the adventures of Charlie Chan) "Seven Keys To Baldpate" is easily Cohan's most popular play. While he is known mostly for his musical contributions, "Seven Keys" has been revived and filmed many, many times. Cohan himself starred in the first filmed version (1917) & starred in the revival in 1935 for the Player's Club. In films, the story was remade more times with the latest film adaptation being the "House Of Long Shadows" (1983) with such film greats as Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, John Carradine, and Peter Cushing. The play has been so popular that it is included in almost every volume of best plays of the early 20th Century.
